Provide your guests with the perfect sleep: Mitre’s checklist

As part of National Bed Month, we are discussing what makes the perfect night’s sleep, from the temperature of a room right through to the quality of the bedding you use; a great night’s sleep doesn't happen by accident. Providing an exceptional sleep experience is the essential element to any great hotel stay, which is why, we have put together a handy check list

1. It’s all about the comfort of your beds and mattresses

This may seem obvious, but when you are busy with other responsibilities and you are working tirelessly to ensure that your guests are having a wonderful experience throughout their entire stay, it can be easy to overlook the basics. Every so often, we suggest lying down on your beds and assessing their comfort from a customer’s point of view. This will help you understand whether your beds and or mattresses need updating. If you think you still have some use left out of your mattresses but the comfort needs enhancing, try using a mattress topper to supplement the comfort of your mattress.

2. Ensure your rooms are at the ideal temperature

Not many guests will appreciate an overheated, stuffy hotel room. To allow your guests to experience the perfect night’s sleep, we suggest setting your thermostat to around 18ºC. Setting your thermostat to this cool but comfortable temperature will help your guests fall asleep faster as well as help them sleep better throughout the night.

During the summer months, it can be hard to control the temperature, try using a cooling pillow protector, such as Coolguard that has a temperature control property to help keep your guests feeling cool.

3. Don’t underestimate the importance of quality bed linen

Good quality, high thread count bed linen can have a big impact on the comfort of your beds. Bed linen with a Percale weave is cool to touch and provides a cooling comfortable sleep. Whereas Sateen bed linen gives your beds a fresh, silky smooth feel and is wonderful to sleep against. 100% cotton bed linen is renowned for having cooling properties; this breathable fabric will help keep your guests cool throughout the night.

4. Renew your pillows regularly

Your guests will love sinking their head into a luxurious pillow after a long and busy day and a good quality sumptuous pillow is a relatively straight forward way to provide your guest with an element of luxury. Renewing your pillows regularly will keep them feeling fresh and plump. Because everyone is different, when it comes to pillow preference, why not offer a pillow menu? Offering your guests a choice will really add that personal touch and will help provide your guests with their perfect night’s sleep. Read our Pillow Menu Guide to find out how to get started.

5. Give your duvet purchase more thought

You may think that purchasing your duvets is a fairly straightforward task, however the quality, fill and tog rating of a duvet can have a huge influence on an individual’s quality of sleep. When purchasing your duvets, ask yourself the following...

  • Will your duvets cater for all guests?
  • What tog rating is best?
  • What fills should you opt for?

For a breakdown on duvet fills, read our duvet guide.

6. Create a calming, relaxing sleep environment

The ambience of a guest-room should be a number one priority when updating your rooms as these seemingly unimportant little extras can have an effect on the quality of your guest’s sleep. Use colours and prints that evoke a sense of calmness and tranquillity so your guests can wind down after a busy day. Ideally, you will also want to create a dark environment to promote sleep onset. Blackout lined curtains will help block out light that can creep into the guestroom from outside, this includes moonlight, streetlamps and morning light when the sun rises. We advise that you always use blackout lined curtains, which is why all of our curtains are blackout lined as standard.
