ISO Certifications Awarded For Mitre’s Green Initiatives

Bardsey Island National Nature Reserve

Mitre Linen, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of bedding, towelling and soft furnishings to the hospitality industry, has been awarded ISO certification in two areas which benefit the environment.

ISO 500001 for Energy Management is awarded for the implementation of systems which integrate energy management into every part of a business. ISO 140001 for Environmental Management recognises an effective systematic approach to reducing the adverse impact business activities, processes, products and services have on the environment.

“We’ve done it! Establishing more environmentally friendly ways of doing business has been one of our key objectives over the past few years,” said Mitre Linen General Manager Kate Gough.

“Everyone in the company has played a part in helping us to introduce greener ways of working while maintaining our high standards of quality and efficiency. The Mitre team is very proud of this achievement, but we don’t see it as the end of the road. We will continue to introduce new green initiatives wherever possible to further enhance our contribution to a cleaner, greener world. We’re already asking colleagues to come up with more ideas.”

Bardsey Island is a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Mitre recently donated Eco range duvets to the charitable trust which runs the island. Eco range duvets have fillings made from recycled plastic bottles.

Duvets That Don't Cost The Earth

Bardsey Island

Mitre’s new Eco duvets have been a big success with the Bardsey Island Trust, a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. The environmentally friendly duvets are made from recycled plastic bottles and so are fully consistent with the island’s commitment to protecting the environment.

“Until now, visitors have been asked to bring their own duvets with them,” said Caroline Jones from the Bardsey Island Trust, “Mitre’s Eco collection duvets mean we can provide them with truly green duvets made from waste plastic. This struck a chord with us as despite our tireless efforts to keep Bardsey clear of damaging waste, plastics like water bottles travel to us on the oceans from France and Spain, littering our pristine shoreline and creating a hazard for wildlife.”

The construction of Mitre Eco duvets and pillows utilises recycled plastic bottles which are extruded into non-allergenic and incredibly soft fibres. The result is a duvet which is as snug and squashy as a traditionally manufactured alternative, but which uses 40% less energy and 70% less water.

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to supply our Eco duvets for the accommodation on Bardsey Island,” said Mitre Linen General Manager Kate Gough.
